The CZ lineup, decoded: P-10, Shadow 2 and what the letters mean
What B and BD actually mean, safety versus decocker, what replaced the P-07, and why the Shadow 2 wins matches but makes a poor carry gun.
CZ makes some of the best-shooting handguns available and labels them with a code that assumes you already know the answer. Here is the key.
The CZ 75 letters, once and for all
- B = firing pin block. That is the entire meaning. It is a passive drop safety CZ added in 1998. A pre-B CZ 75 does not have one.
- BD = B plus Decocker. And here is the part that matters: the decocker replaces the manual safety. You do not get both.
- SP-01 = the modernized full-size — accessory rail, 18-round magazines, extended beavertail.
- P-01 = the compact alloy-framed decocker gun, adopted by Czech national police.
Safety or decocker — pick deliberately
This is the single most useful conversation to have before you buy a CZ, and it has nothing to do with which gun is better.
A safety model (75 B, SP-01) is built to be carried cocked and locked — hammer back, safety on, like a 1911. Your first shot is a light single-action press.
A decocker model (75 BD, P-01, D PCR, SP-01 Tactical) has no manual safety at all. You press the lever, the hammer drops safely, and you carry hammer-down with a long double-action first shot, like a SIG.
Neither is safer. They are two different manuals of arms, and you should choose the one you will actually train with.
P-10: the striker guns
Simple suffixes for once. C compact, F full size, S subcompact, OR optics-ready, SR suppressor-ready with a threaded barrel. There is a Ported version with an integrated compensator, and a COA version that ships with an Aimpoint COA already mounted from the factory.
The P-10 C is the value pick of the whole CZ catalog. Get the OR version even if you have no plans for a dot yet.
The P-07 question
If you came looking for a P-07, it is no longer in CZ’s current US catalog. Its replacement is the P-09 Nocturne series — same silhouette and grip shape, updated sights, deeper serrations and a factory optics cut. Notably the Nocturne mounts Shield RMS and Holosun-K footprints directly, with no plate, and keeps CZ’s party trick: a swappable safety-or-decocker you can convert yourself with the parts in the box.
P-07s and P-09s are still on retailer shelves. They are good guns. Just know you are buying previous-generation inventory.
What the Shadow 2 is actually for
The Shadow 2 is a steel-framed competition pistol built for IPSC and USPSA Production, and it is the default gun in that division for a reason.
Three things do the work. It is heavy, and it does not move. It has the lowest bore axis in the business — the slide rides inside the frame rails rather than on top, a CZ signature since 1975, and the reduction in muzzle rise is visible. And the single-action trigger and reset after that first double-action shot are excellent.
The honest counterpoint: a Shadow 2 is a poor first carry gun. It is a heavy steel competition pistol with a DA/SA manual of arms and a long grip.
If you want the Shadow 2 feel in something carryable, CZ built exactly that — the Shadow 2 Carry, on an aluminum frame at about 31 oz, 4″ barrel, 15+1, decocker, and a direct RMSc optic cut with co-witnessing irons. It exists because CZ kept getting asked.
Optics across the line
CZ is mid-transition and it splits cleanly. Direct mount, no plate: the P-09 Nocturne series, the Shadow 2 Carry, and the TS 3. Plate system: the P-10 OR models and the Shadow 2 OR. CZ does not publish how many plates ship in the box, so ask before you assume.
If a red dot is your priority, the Nocturne, the Shadow 2 Carry and the factory-mounted COA are the three CZ actually solved.
Does the Colt ownership change anything?
Short answer: not to the guns. CZ’s parent bought Colt in 2021 and renamed itself Colt CZ Group in 2022, and later added Sellier & Bellot ammunition. CZ pistols are still designed and built in Uheršký Brod. Nothing has been redesigned or relocated because of it.
What you actually notice is web housekeeping: cz-usa.com now redirects to czfirearms.com, and a fair number of older models quietly left the catalog during the migration. If a link in a five-year-old review is dead, that is why.
Gone from the current catalog
No longer listed: P-07, plain P-09, P-10 M, CZ 97, CZ 85, SP-01 Shadow, Czechmate, Tactical Sport, 2075 RAMI and the Kadet .22 conversion kits. Several are still widely available at retail. If you want one, buying it now is not a bad idea.
Which one
- Best value CZ: P-10 C OR.
- Hammer-fired, optics-ready, modern: P-09 Nocturne. This is the P-07 buyer’s answer.
- The classic, cocked and locked: CZ 75 B. Prefer a decocker? 75 BD.
- Full-size steel with a rail: SP-01, or SP-01 Tactical for the ambidextrous decocker.
- Competition: Shadow 2, or Shadow 2 OR for Production Optics.
- “Shadow 2 but I can carry it”: Shadow 2 Carry.
Come feel the bore axis for yourself at the shop on Route 112 in Medford. It is the CZ argument, and it does not translate to paper.
